School Board member Colleen Conklin — the board's longest-serving member, first elected in 2000 — has filed an application for the position of Flagler County School District superintendent.

"I did it! I hit submit!" Conklin wrote in a public post on her Facebook page the afternoon of Jan. 31. "After much consideration and intense prayer, I submitted my packet for consideration to become Flagler County Schools next Superintendent. I truly believe that TOGETHER we can do amazing things for our students. Taking a leap of faith and putting it in God's hands now. If it's meant to be, it will be."
Superintendents in Flagler County are selected by the School Board, so Conklin's four current School Board colleagues will have to make a decision on her application.
Conklin is an assistant professor and director at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Gaetz Aerospace Institute. She holds a doctoral degree in education from Nova Southeastern University and a master's in education from City University of New York System: City College, according to her faculty webpage.
Conklin did not immediately respond to the Palm Coast Observer's request for comment, and her application packet had not yet been uploaded to the district's website as of 4 p.m. Jan. 31, the final day of the application period for the position (the deadline is at midnight).
Aside from Conklin, 28 people had applied for the position as of the afternoon of Jan. 31, including former Flagler Schools Assistant Superintendent Vernon Orndorff, who had also applied for the superintendent position when it opened in 2017, but ended up withdrawing and taking a position in Texas. The current Flagler Schools superintendent is James Tager, who was selected by the board for the position in May 2017 and announced in July 2019 that he planned to retire at the end of his contract, on June 30, 2020.
