The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach's second annual Glow 5K helped raised over $5,500 dollars thanks to the race sponsors, volunteers and nearly 300 runners who participated.
The runners used blinkers and glow products to light the way during the moonlight run on the beach, according to a press release. The overall winners were: Hunter Phillips, Lee Kolias and Mario LaTorre for the men's division; and Moriya Patsch, Lindsay Moore and J. Patsch for the women's division.
This year's presenting sponsor was AdventHealth Daytona Beach, and the funds raised will benefit the Downtown Fit Loop project that will feature exercise equipment at each of the Granada Bridge's four corner parks. The Club will gift the Downtown Fit Loop to the city.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida Volusia/Flagler chapter is hosting its second-annual "Future Voters Essay Contest."
As the ACLU is celebrating its 100th-anniversary, high school students throughout Volusia and Flagler counties are invited to write a 1,500-2,000-word essay on this prompt: “Since 1920, the American Civil Liberties Union has vigorously fought for fundamental freedoms. Looking back on our 100-year history, which of the ACLU’s landmark cases has had the most significant impact on protecting your individual rights and liberties as guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States?”
Four finalists will be selected, and each of them will receive two complimentary tickets for the ACLU's 2020 annual meeting and banquet, to be held at the Halifax River Yacht Club at 6 p.m. on March 29. The winner will be announced at the banquet, and will be awarded $100 and invited to read their essay, according to a press release.
The keynote speaker will be Cheryl Brown Henderson, whose father was a named plaintiff in the 1954 case of Brown v. Board of Education. She will be joined by Dr. Micah Kubic, executive director of the Florida ACLU. Students may email essays to Jeanne Tanke at [email protected] by March 1, with a email subject titled "Student Essay."
Volusia County's Community Information Division was recognized by the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association for its effort to keep residents informed during Hurricane Dorian by awarding the division with its 2020 Media Award during its annual conference on Feb. 6.
The team was led by former Community Information Director Joanne Magley, and according to a press release, the team sent out 37 news releases, organized eight news conferences and made 67 social media posts with a reach of 1.1 million people. The team is composed of three public information officers, three production coordinators, a web designer, graphic artist and support staff.
Kalin Home Furnishings recently raised $900 for Food Brings Hope thanks to donations received during its National Stressless Chairs Charity Sale.
Customers received $200 off their purchase if they donated $50 to Food Brings Hope.
The Knights of Columbus Prince of Peace Council 8791 annual Tootsie Roll Campaign for Citizens with Disabilities, the organization's largest fundraiser, is underway at grocery stores in Ormond Beach.
The proceeds of the campaign go to schools and organizations that help developmentally-disabled adults and children, according to a press release. Most funds are distributed to the ESE programs at local schools, the Special Olympics, The Arc Volusia and a statewide Knights' fund.
The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club had a busy January, with five members traveling to Clermont on Jan. 18, to attend the District 35-0 Advisory Meeting, joining 100 Lions Club members from across the district, according to a press release.
The Lions also held its Joint Zone Meeting on Jan. 20, at the Hope Place Family Shelter. The Lions brought donated items to the shelter as well as donated $150. Later on Jan. 29, over 50 members and guests celebrated the club's 15th-anniversary of the charter at Houligan's on International Speedway Boulevard.

Food Brings Hope recently helped Mainland High School's Girls with STYLES and TeenZone program members visit The Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park in recognition of African American History month, according to a press release.
The girls arrived via SunRail to visit the center, which was once the heart of the African American community in winter park. They also toured the art exhibits. Pictured in the photo are Alize Smith, Yazmin Perry, Alyssa Okengbenro-Monkhouse, Cemyiah Talton, Mylia Simpson, Chris of Crealde School of Art, Barbara Chandler of Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Nina Samuel, Imani Lane, Olivia WIlliams, Destiny King and Deja King.
The Darcy Akers Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the Rotary Club of Ormond Beach, is now accepting scholarship applications from area high school seniors for the 2020-2024 program period. The fund, which has provided nearly $600,000 in scholarships since its founding, utilizes the following criteria in selecting recipients: community service, demonstrated leadership, scholastic success and financial need.
