“There was never a doubt in my mind that we would have perfect weather for this year’s golf tournament,” said Joe Rizzo, Flagler County Education Foundation executive director.
The foundation’s golf tournament was a sold-out event, held at Plantation Bay Golf Course on Jan. 24, with 134 players. It raised $32,000 for key foundation programs such as Innovative Teacher Grants, the STUFF Bus program, Classroom to Careers flagships and college scholarships.
“I don’t remember ever seeing so many people having such a great time in one place for such a good cause,” said David Alfin, president-elect for the foundation.

The following Palm Coast residents have earned their degrees from Western Governors University. The online, nonprofit university has graduated over 167,000 students from across the country since its inception in 1997.
Christina Petria earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting.
Candice Ringberg earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing.
The Central and North Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is seeking volunteers to join in the fight against the disease.
“Right now, millions of Americans face the devastation of Alzheimer's,” said Lisa Whaley, vice president of programs for the Alzheimer’s Association Central and North Florida Chapter. “This disease is robbing us of our families, our futures and our finances. At the Alzheimer's Association, our network of staff and volunteers are working relentlessly to advance world-class research, ensure access to gold-standard care and support, and engage mission driven volunteers who make it all happen. These volunteer positions are needed throughout our chapter area.”
Current volunteer opportunities include: community educators, community representatives, early stage social engagement leaders, faith outreach representatives and support group facilitators. Thanks to a donation from the Flagler Woman’s Club, the Flagler Beach Police Department has purchased child identification kits that will be provided for free to parents, grandparents or guardians of children. Members of the Flagler Beach Police Department will be on hand at February’s First Friday event to assist with fingerprinting children and issuing the newly purchased kits.
The kits are small, come with a sealable bag, and have available space for fingerprints, a recent photograph, limited medical information, personal information, physical information, dental impressions and a hair sample.
“The Flagler Woman’s Club is truly committed to helping our community in a variety of ways, and thanks to their generosity we’re proud to offer these important safety kits to families for free,” said FBPD Chief Matt Doughney. “The children of our community are our future and thanks to the Flagler Woman’s Club, our children just became a little bit safer”.

During their annual meeting on Jan. 29, the Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway, Inc. announced their 2019 Volunteer of the Year. Outgoing president of the organization, Bill McClure, was recognized for a decade of service to the Friends of A1A and presented with the annual volunteer service award by newly elected president Marge Rooyakkers, of Hammock Dunes Club in Flagler County.
“We’re pleased to honor Bill with the Volunteer of the Year award for his service not only in 2019, but over many years,” Rooyakkers said. “His enthusiasm for the Friends of A1A is felt by all who know him. Bill has dedicated countless hours to the organization, providing enthusiastic leadership during his term as president, earning praise from board members for his upbeat, can-do attitude and his willingness to champion transportation, safety and economic development projects for the Friends of A1A and the community.”
Rooyakkers takes the helm as the Friends of A1A prepare to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their designation as Florida Scenic Highways in 2021, followed by the 20th anniversary of the A1A Scenic & Historic Byway’s National Scenic Byway designation in 2022.
