Con of cones

12:10 a.m. — 700 block of South Atlantic Avenue

Resisting an officer without violence. Police arrested a 21-year-old Ormond Beach man who ran away from officers after he put cones in the road.

The reporting officer was traveling southbound on South Atlantic Avenue in his patrol car when he noticed a vehicle in the northbound lane swerve abruptly as if to avoid something. According to the police report, the officer then noticed traffic cones spread across the northbound lanes in front of a local hotel. He activated his emergency lights and pulled into the median with the intent to remove them, but as he did so, he noticed a man running toward the beach.

He asked the man to stop, but the man did not comply, even as the officer ran after him. Eventually, police located another man who loosely matched the first man's description, according to the police report, and they spoke with him and two others at a nearby motel. All stated they had not run from the police nor put the cones on the road. However, a guest at the motel identified the second man as one she had seen running across the pool deck earlier.

The second man did admit to placing one traffic cone in the roadway, but said the man police were looking for was not present at the time. Soon after, another officer notified the reporting officer that the first man approached him and identified himself as "the one you're looking for."

The man admitted to placing the cones in the road and told police he ran because he was scared he would be arrested. His fears came true, and he was transported to jail.

Dangerous chemicals

9:28 a.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard

Inhaling harmful chemicals. A 44-year-old Daytona Beach woman was found by police laying on the ground behind a local supermarket with a can of keyboard air duster. The can's nozzle was in her mouth.

The reporting officer noted in the arrest report that as he approached, he could hear the sound of air leaving the duster while she had it in her mouth. He told her to stop, butt the woman said that she wasn't doing anything, only "spraying her pants off."

There were two empty duster cans next to her, according to the police report. The can's list of chemical components warned of injury or death if ingested. The woman was placed under arrest and the fire department arrived on scene to clear her for transport. She was taken to jail.

Hotel Goldilocks

8 a.m. — 500 block of South Atlantic Avenue

Unarmed burglary. When the day manager of a local hotel entered what was supposed to be an empty room, one he is authorized to utilize for personal use when working, he instead found a sleeping 25-year-old Daytona Beach man.

The manager told police that he and his wife arrived at the hotel this morning and that his wife planned to get some rest before starting her shift. That's when he found the man, and noticed his belongings were tampered with.

The reporting officer arrived at the scene thereafter and he spoke with the man, who was now awake. The man said he bought the room a long time ago and had a right to be there. The officer noticed that nothing the man was saying was true or made sense.

He was taken to jail and trespassed from the property.
