This year's King of the Grill was held at Rockefeller Gardens on Saturday, Sept. 28. The eight-annual competition featured both amateur and professional grilling competitions, along with live music, a beer garden, kids activities and several vendors. The city also took the opportunity to begin its One Less plastic straw campaign, and handed out reusable straws and bags to residents.
Two cadets from the Ormond Beach Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol were recently honored by the Civil Air Patrol's Florida Wing Commander with two awards.
Cadet Captain Grayson Bertaina was presented the Amelia Earhart Award, the second milestone of the cadet program, which is earned after the completion of the first 11 achievements of the program, according to a press release. The cadet must pass a comprehensive 100-question examination, and only 5% of Civil Air Patrol cadets obtain this award.
Cadet Second Lieutenant Emily Kraft was presented the General Billy Mitchell Award, which marks the completion of phase II of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program, recognizing sustained excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness and character. To receive the award, cadets must have passed comprehensive examinations and completed a a week-long encampment

Members of the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach joined others for the International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 21.
A dozen Rotarians, along with three other volunteers, picked up trash at Sanchez Park for the cleanup effort. Although Sanchez was found in a clean condition, a
press release states, the group picked up about 10-15 gallons of trash. The descriptions, weights and other documentation of the trash were sent to Ocean Conservancy.
Volunteers in more than 100 countries participate in the effort each year. The Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach is looking for new members. Visit RotaryDOB.com
In honor of National Philanthropy Day, the Volusia/Flagler Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will join chapters across the nation to honor donors and volunteers whose gifts of time, talent and treasure contribute to the success of nonprofit agencies during a special event on Friday, Nov. 15.

Event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Oceanside Country Club, located at 75. N. Halifax Drive. Individual event tickets cost $45. Non-member and member tables available for purchase. Lunch will be served.
The Ormond Beach Lions Club honored Seabreeze High School student Connery Cassidy as its student-athlete of the month for September.
Cassidy earned fifth-place in the 500-freestyle at the regionals as a sophomore,
as well as made all-area Girls second team. Though she was injured her junior year, Cassidy returned to captain the girls swim team. She has been invited to the All-Star Preps twice, and has earned the swim team MVP recognition.
Aside from sports, Cassidy serves as an altar server at St. Brendan Catholic Church, is a lifeguard, certified emergency medical responder and a volunteer at junior lifeguard camp. She has earned a 3.75 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. She also serves as the vice president of the Spirit Club and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Cassidy is currently considering attending the University of North Florida after graduating.
