Quilters aid children in ER

Quilters by the Sea Ormond Beach donated 12 handmade quilts to comfort children in AdventHealth Palm Coast’s emergency department recently. Each quarter, the group selects different community organizations to receive donated quilts.

“I know firsthand how much love and time goes into making each of these quilts,” said Dr. Stephen Coltharp, emergency medicine physician at AdventHealth Palm Coast. Coltharp’s mother-in-law is a member of Quilters by the Sea.

“The children that come through our ER will truly appreciate these and will find comfort in them,” he said.

Poker run for bikes or boats set

America’s Boating Club, Daytona Beach Sail and Power Squadron and the Twin Vs Motor Cycle Club are holding a 3rd Annual Charity Event on June 2 starting at Halifax Harbor Daytona Beach and running down river to New Smyrna Beach with five stops along both sides of the river where boats and bikes can draw their cards. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Joe Tatro family and “Folds of Honor.” Stops include: Halifax Municipal Harbor, Daytona Marina and Boat Works, DJ’s Deck, Down the Hatch, Outriggers, and Caribbean Jacks (final locations will be announced at Registration.)

The run begins at 9 a.m. and the best five hands must be turned in at Caribbean Jacks no later than 3:30 pm. The cost is $20 for boat captain or bike driver and $15 for each additional hand in the boat or on the bike.

Awards for Best Hand, Best Hand Boats and Best Hand Bikes.

Pre-register on the Daytona Beach Sail and Power Squadron (DBSPS) facebook site, or register on the morning of the event at Halifax Harbor.

City to honor heroes

The city of Ormond Beach Hometown Heroes Banner Program will honor military service members who reside in or have family ties to the city. This program is made possible by a sponsorship from Halifax Health who joins the city in recognizing these men and women.

Ninety-six banners will be displayed across the Granada Bridge every November, each featuring the service member’s photo, name, branch of service, and dates served. Additionally, each service member honored will receive a keepsake replica banner which will be presented at an annual ceremony at the Performing Arts Center.

“We look forward to partnering with Halifax Health in acknowledging our Hometown Heroes,” said city spokeswoman Loretta Moisio.

Details are available www.ormondbeach.org and in the city’s Leisure Services office. Registration will continue through Oct. 1, and applications will be processed in the order in which they are received by the Leisure Services office.

Women Who Care grows

Volusia County Women Who Care continues to grow, announcing at the 2nd quarter meeting that 20 new members since February have brought the total to 115. During the meeting, the alliance voted to give the evening’s proceeds to the Gina McReynolds Foundation, which serves Central Florida women battling breast cancer. Because of matching grants, the total was $18,000.

Also, at the meeting, Andrea and Larry Frank agreed to provide a 100% match for all new members until the end of the year. At every meeting, each member donates $100 and the money goes to a selected charity. Visit volusiacountywomenwhocare.com.
