While most residents were celebrating Father’s Day with family and friends, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office was responding to multiple domestic violence-related calls. Two of the more violent incidents took place on the evening of Sunday, June 16.

The first call came just after 6 p.m. from a victim stating her boyfriend, Joel Jakub, 26, had punched her several times in the face and in the stomach area until she was nearly unconscious inside of their van.

The victim told deputies that the argument started after the couple decided to drive from Georgia to Florida on Saturday, June 15. The victim told Jakub that she no longer wished to go on the road trip and had made two separate attempts to leave but was forced back inside against her will by Jakub. It was not until the van became disabled that the victim was able to escape and call law enforcement.

Deputies arrived on scene and established a perimeter in the wooded area next to the van in search of Jakub. Volusia’s AirOne Emergency Helicopter and the FCSO K-9 Unit also assisted in the search. Jakub was found in the woods and taken to AdventHealth Palm Coast to receive medical attention for a dog bite to the shoulder.

Once released from the hospital, Jakub was booked into the Flagler County Jail and is being held on a $22,500 bond.

A few hours later, the FCSO received another call. While no one identified themselves on the call, dispatchers could hear a male and a female yelling and the female saying “stop!” in the background. Dispatch traced the call to a residence on Ferdinand Drive in Palm Coast.

Deputies arrived on scene and witnessed the suspect, Dean Irwin, 27, attempting to force the victim into a vehicle in the driveway. Upon seeing law enforcement, the victim broke away from Irwin and ran toward the deputies for help.

When questioned by deputies, the victim said Irwin grabbed her phone and broke it by throwing it to the ground. He then threw her to the ground, causing scrapes to her arms and legs. The victim ran back inside the home and into a bedroom in an attempt to get away from Irwin but he broke through the door and hit and bit the victim multiple times.

The victim was able to break away a second time and locked herself inside the master bedroom where she called 911. Irwin broke through that door as well and threw her to the ground, possibly breaking one of her fingers in the process. He climbed on top of her and continued biting and choking her. The victim told deputies that she could not breathe while this was happening. Irwin then grabbed her by her hair and injured finger and demanded that she drive him home before law enforcement arrived.

Irwin was taken to the Flagler County Jail on a $72,500 bond.

“Both of these cases became extremely violent quickly,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “I am thankful that neither of the victims sustained life threatening injuries and that we were able to intervene before things got any worse. We take domestic violence seriously in Flagler County and have many resources available to help. If you are in an abusive relationship or are the victim of a domestic violence, do not
wait. Call us now and let us help you. It could mean the difference between life and death.”
