The Prince of Peace Council of Catholic Women recently presented two graduating high school students with a $1,000 Angel scholarship.
The winners were Caroline Wilson, a graduate of Mainland High School who plans to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and Audrey Yarish, a Spruce Creek High School graduate who plans to attend Florida State University.
Wilson has been an altar server at Prince of Peace for 10 years, as well as a leader in the EDGE Teen pro-life group and has participated in band and the orchestra. Yarish holds a second-degree black belt and has been a parishioner since pre-school. She sings in church choir and is a vacation bible school leader.
The scholarships were presented by Vice President Lauren Morris and Susan Ignacio.
Mary Barr and her charity God's Little Angels are looking to save the "soles" of students in need of shoes for the next school year. She and the organization's volunteers are raising money to buy shoes for about 300 Head Start children throughout Volusia County.
Checks should be made payable to God's Little Angels and can be sent to the SunTrust Bank, 200 S. Palmetto Ave., Daytona Beach FL 32114. The drive will run through summer. Call 253-5349.
The Jewish Federation is closer to being able to donate 7,000 backpacks for over 75 schools in Volusia and Flagler County thanks to a $10,000 donation by Security First Insurance.
The check was presented to Jewish Federation President Marvin Miller and Executive Director Gloria Max by Melissa DeVries, on behalf of Locke and Ann Burt of Security First.
The residents and staff of Food Brings Hope's HOPE House recently hosted about 15 members of the James Moore and Company accounting firm for a community day of service.
The volunteers aimed to beautify the yard, deck area and plant a small garden for residents, in the hopes herbs and vegetables will eventually sprout and be enjoyed. HOPE House stands for Helping Others Prosper through Education. Its mission is to provide unaccompanied youth in Volusia County Schools with a safe and stable living environment, ensuring graduation from high school and helping them become productive members of society.
The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club recently presented two graduating students with $1,000 Al Weeks, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. The students were Julia Yost and Madison Mulcahy.
Yost, a Seabreeze High School graduate plans to attend the University of Florida to study behavioral neuroscience. Mulcahy is a Spruce Creek High School graduate who played soccer all four years of school and was class president. She will also be attending the University of Florida and participating in its Honors program to study neuroscience.
Both students were presented the scholarship by Club Members Lions Bobbie Check and Mary Yochum. Call 441-4421.
