Ormond Beach recognized as a 2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion

Ormond Beach has been named a 2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion by the State Surgeon General and Secretary John Armstrong, MD, FACS, for the third consecutive year. Dr. Armstrong has made healthy weight a top priority for Florida as obesity has become a national epidemic. In Florida, 65% of adults are at an unhealthy weight, and one out of three children is considered overweight or obese.

“The City of Ormond Beach is delighted to be recognized by the Department of Health as a 2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion," Mayor Ed Kelley said in a press release. "Our consistent enhancements to benefit the health of our citizens continue to facilitate a lifetime of healthy choices.”

The Healthy Weight Community Champion recognition program highlights communities that have made progress in adopting policies which provide healthy choices to its citizens.

Ormond Beach accomplishments and opportunities for healthy choices include:

The City requires all new private and public developments to provide bike parking and requires bike lanes during road construction.
In 2015, the third Mayor’s Health and Fitness Challenge (12-week program) opened to residents and workers and included before and after biometrics; access to a variety of fitness centers for a free trial and reduced rates; free meal preparation workshops with recipes and coaching. There were 199 challengers losing approximately 480 pounds.
Residents have free access to City-run gyms and weight rooms.
The City Manager hosts a monthly “Walk with the Manager” where residents join the manager on a two-mile walk in different areas of the city.
At City-sponsored events, the city employs food and beverage vendors who offer varied healthy options.

An unusual weather phenomenon known as a fog bow was captured by J. Walker Fischer Feb. 2 in Ormond-By-The-Sea. "It's not the groundhog's shadow, but it's close enough, Florida beach-style."

Correction: Art X 9 show date

In last week's issue, Don Kolberg's art work was left out of the Art X 9 article. This is one of his paintings, titled "Trees."

In last week's Arts and Culture section, the upcoming Art X 9 show date was wrongly listed.

The opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 at The Casements. The show runs through Feb. 29.

New time for Prince of Peace Council of Catholic Women Card Parties

Prince of Peace Council of Catholic Women hosts a monthly Card Party for the men and ladies of the parish and the community. The new time is from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. It will still be held on the second Thursday of the month through April. It is a chance to socialize, play card or board games, have a nice desert but no lunch, and maybe win a door prize. Mark your calendars for Feb. 11.

The Card Parties are held in the Social Hall at Prince of Peace Church, 600 S. Nova Road. Tickets are available at the door for $5.

Florida Hospital donates to United Way

Five Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties donated $10,000 Jan. 25 to the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties.

“The United Way supports many agencies in our community that provide assistance to those in need,” said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital Flagler CEO and board member of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties since 2014. “They hold agencies accountable for good

stewardship of the funds provided and operate an efficient administration services. We believe in what the United Way is doing and are pleased to be able to support the many community agencies that are focused on helping our friends and neighbors in need.”

“The United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties works tirelessly to make a difference for those living in our community and we are proud to support these incredible efforts,” said Jill Piazza, vice president of care integration for all Florida Hospitals in the state, as well as board member of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties since 2007. “Both Ken and I consider it a privilege to represent Florida Hospital on the board and helping to meet these community needs.”
