The Flagler County School District recognized the more than 70 teachers and staff members retiring from the district this year with a reception at the Government Services Building and a few words or thanks during the School Board’s regular meeting June 2.

“You’ve touched future generations, and you may not see or know what the outcome of that will be for many years to come and how that will impact their families,” Board Member Colleen Conklin told the teachers at the reception. “I know for me as a past teacher, finding those stories from students you’ve had tin the past, hearing from them, will just make a world of difference in your own lives. … Thank you for what you’ve done for our community and for our district.”

Indian Trails teacher Jeanne Wood, who is retiring this year after serving with the school district for 22 years, has often had students come back to her years after graduation to say hello, including one who returned the day of the ceremony, wearing his college ROTC uniform. One of her favorite instances was when a young lady came back, she said, chuckling, “And she turned to the students and said, ‘Listen to her, she knows what she’s talking about!’”

Bunnell Elementary School Secretary Debbie Durrance, retiring after serving at Bunnell Elementary since 1979, had done a little of everything in her years there, serving as an attendance clerk, teacher’s aide and disciplinary administrator. “I’d never leave that school — I had many opportunities, but always sought to stay there,” she said. “Wonderful people, wonderful teachers, wonderful kids and parents.”
