State Rep. Travis Hutson met with seniors in the Take Stock in Children scholarship program at both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools Thursday, Feb. 28.

“In college, a lot of outside influences will try to steal you away, but stay true to your values and beliefs,” he told the future graduates.

Hutson shared with the students his plan to push for academy-style programs in Flagler County schools, which would include business incentives for those who partner with the programs.

“We want to encourage them to go to college, but we want to be able to give kids the option if trade is for them,” he said.

Hutson also made reference to a school safety bill that is being floated right now. The bill would call for an outside source to evaluate lockdown, fire and tornado drills. The idea is to pinpoint where each school excels and where there are weaknesses.
