An unexpected visitor: Seeya later …
A neighborhood near Tomoka State Park had an unexpected visitor last weekend, April 27, when a three-foot-long alligator took to the streets and started roaming. Liza Parchuc snapped this photo in her Poplar Drive cul-de-sac.
And the fitness challenge winners are …
Winners of Ormond Beach’s first-annual Mayor’s Health & Fitness Challenge were announced Saturday, April 27. They are listed as follows.
Most pounds lost (body mass index more than 30): Bob Coleman; Terri Hester (second place); Stephanie Speller (third)
Biggest percentage of pounds lost (BMI more than 30): Bob Coleman; Terri Hester; Greg Evans
Physical Fitness Challenge: Scott McKee; Mario Pozo; Leslie McKee
Honorable Mentions: Mayor Ed Kelley (weight, percentage, BMI); Teresa White (best cheerleader); Stephanie Speller (most enthusiastic); Peggy Falater (most supportive); Pamela Kelley (most dedicated); Sam West (fitness challenge: one to watch in 2014); Terri Hester (“A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words” award); Barbara Sandberg (2014 Meyor’s Health & Fitness Challenge raffle).
Twenty-three challengers competed with a family member. The City Commission will give out fitness awards at its 7 p.m. meeting, May 7.
Darden Restaurants to serve $3,000 to HUM
One of 850 grants Darden Restaurants will give away in its second-annual Restaurant Community Grants program, Halifax Urban Ministries will receive $3,000 from the food company to benefit homelessness prevention.
The restaurants in Darden’s network — including Red Lobster, Olive Garden and others — will award more than $1.9 million to nonprofits this year.
