For many, beer and running isn't a great combination.

But for Amy Coopersmith and Amy Higgs, both Flagler County residents, it will help raise money to compete in the New York City Marathon in two months.

Higgs and Coopersmith are both scheduled to run in NYC Marathon on Nov. 4, but before they do that, they need to raise $9,000 together. (Unlike the Boston Marathon, runners who want to compete in the NYC Marathon must either qualify or raise money for a charity.)

And so, Higgs and Coopersmith have planned a 5K pub run/walk for later this month, in Flagler Beach.

In the NYC Marathon, Higgs will run for Team Robin Hood, which, for more than 20 years, has fought poverty in New York City.

Coopersmith will run for Team Healthier Generation. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is an organization that develops programs to prevent childhood obesity, with the goal of reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity by 2015, and to empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices.

The 5K pub run/walk will take place Friday, Sept. 28. The race will begin at Golden Lion Café, and then stop at seven other restaurants/bars in Flagler Beach, before participants ultimately finish at Golden Lion, for a post-race party.

The other seven stops, where runners/walkers can get shots of beer (or Gatorade or water) include Finn’s Beachside Pub, Big Easy Café, Hurricane Patty’s, Giuseppe’s New York Pizza & Italian Restaurant, Johnny D’s Bar & Grill, Fisherman’s Net Restaurant & Seafood Market, and Joseph’s Italian Bistro & Pizzeria.

The NYC Marathon will be the first marathon for Higgs and the second for Coopersmith.

“To get this opportunity to run in this is amazing,” Higgs said. “It’s not every day that someone can say they ran in the NYC Marathon, and we’re really pumped for it, and we’re ready to take it on for our charities.”

Higgs and Coopersmith have been training daily with fellow Flagler County runners, many of whom compete in the Palm Coast Race Series.

“They all know we’re working toward this goal ... and they’ve all been very supportive,” Higgs said.

The sponsors for the race include CanDental South, Curleytail Design and Red Pointer Productions. The race won’t be timed, but runners will get number bibs and shirts, Higgs said.

Instead, it will be more about having run while running in a different location and raising money for two charities.
