+ Matanzas softball beats Fleming Island
The Matanzas High School softball team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning Monday night en route to an 10-7 win over Fleming Island.

Earlier this season, the Lady Pirates lost to Fleming Island, 3-1.

Not this time, though.

Matanzas (9-9) followed up its eight-run first inning with two more runs in the third.

Marisa Magnuson (3-1) picked up the win on the mound for Matanzas. She struck out four hitters and issued just one walk in seven innings. She threw 103 pitches, of which 70 were strikes. Gabrielle Prickett threw out a would-be base-stealer in the top of the seventh inning as Fleming Island tried to make a comeback.

Cheyenna Espinoza and Prickett each went went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Magnuson went 3-for-4 with three singles. Amber Johnson and Christina Reynolds both went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

“We came out hitting strong against their No. 1 pitcher in the first inning,” Matanzas coach Sara Novak said.

The Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs lacrosse team lost to a tough Bartam Trail team, 12-2, Thursday night.
