+ Matanzas beats Nease
Matanzas didn’t drive in any runs with a hit Thursday night, but heads-up base running led to an extra-innings 3-1 win against Nease in a crucial District 4-5A matchup.

With the win, Matanzas improved its overall record to 5-6, and 3-1 in district play.

Nease got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, but the Lady Pirates responded in the top of the second inning when Amanda Morea came home on an error at third base following a Cheyenna Espinoza hit.

The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning. In the top half, Matanzas’ Ashley Pelose (2-for-2 with a walk) slapped a single. Marisa Magnuson drove in the go-ahead run on a single to left field. A fielding error by Nease allowed Magnuson to advance to third base. Magnuson later came home on another Nease error.

The Lady Pirates had five singles in the game.

Amber Johnson (4-4) led the way for the Lady Pirates in the pitcher’s circle, striking out five batters and issuing zero walks. Johnson gave up just five hits on the night.
