Three Matanas wrestlers have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state meeet, which will take place Friday afternoon.

Sophomore 132-pounder Pedro Nieves defeated Jeff Letizia, of Olympic Heights, in triple overtime Friday morning in the first round of the Class 2A state meet.

Letizia is a regional champion and ranked No. 8 in the state in the 132-pound weight class, according to Matanzas assistant coach Tyler Hurry.

Jason Cowles, in the 182-pound class, defeated his opponent, 8-1.

Tony Mendez, in the 220-pound class, pinned his opponent in the second round to advance. 

The quarterfinals will take place this afternoon. 

Also, Flagler Palm Coast 182-pounder Logan Smith lost, 6-3, in his first-round match in the Class 3A tournament.

Flagler Palm Coast ousted in Class 8A regional quarterfinals
The Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball finished its season Thursday, Feb. 16, after losing to Oviedo Hagerty, 70-56, in the Class 8A regional quarterfinals.

FPC finished the season 21-6.

The Bulldogs were somewhat shorthanded Thursday night. Freshman guard Malik Maitland didn’t play because of a knee injury, and two players were declared academically ineligible.

FPC was down by as many as 27 points in the second half, but trimmed the deficit to 11 points. Junior Tyler Hopkins led the team in scoring with 23 points. Jimmy Belle scored 13.

Fortunately for second-year coach Gary McDaniel, most of the starting players from this season will return next season, including Hopkins, Maitland and Willie Gardner.

Lambert throws a no-hitter
Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs pitcher Morgan Lambert continues to dominate.

Lambert, a sophomore, threw a no-hitter Thursday night, as the Lady Bulldogs topped Pine Ridge, 15-0, in three innings.

FPC (4-0) scored four runs in the first inning, six in the second, and five in the third.

Lambert had one walk and three strikeouts. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate. Ashton Stevens went 3-for-3 with five RBIs.

This season, Lambert has faced 64 batters in 19 innings of work. She has 37 strikeouts, four walks and has given up five hits. Opponents are hitting just .083 against her, and she has given up zero earned runs.

Lady Pirates beat Nease, 10-0
The Matanzas Lady Pirates softball team beat Nease, 10-0, Thursday night.

Amber Johnson (2-1) had 10 strikeouts and no walks and allowed just four hits in five innings of work.

Amanda Morea went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast play 6:30 p.m. Friday, at FPC.
