Santos: Rotary Club’s Athlete of the Month
Alyssa Santos, a senior at Matanzas High School, has been named as the Rotary Club of Flagler’s Senior Scholar Athlete for December.
Santos is a captain on the Lady Pirates soccer team and is also a member of the flag football and track teams. She has been a four-year starter on both the soccer and flag football teams, and she also has been the captain on the soccer team for the past two seasons.
Off the field, Santos rocks a 3.79 GPA and also does dual enrollment at Daytona State College.
In fact, Santos was eligible to graduate from high school after her junior year because she had all of her credits, but she ultimately decided to stay for her fourth year.
Santos has been involved in the Key Club and the National Honor Society.
“I try to stay involved in the community as well, whether it is tutoring, training kids in soccer, volunteering at the Portuguese American Cultural Club or sending supplies to the troops,” she said.
Matanzas coach Tony Benvenuto said it’s hard to have stats as a defender, but Santos has been an integral part of his team.
“She has been a big part of our team by solidifying our defense for the last four years,” he said. “She is a very smart player, and she has exhibited great leadership qualities by encouraging and challenging her teammates.”
On the flag football team, Santos is the kicker, running back and cornerback on defense. She led the Lady Pirates in touchdowns as a sophomore and a junior, and she said she hopes to have as much success in her senior season in the spring.
Palm Coast Elks hosts annual Hoop Shoot contest
The Palm Coast Elks Hoop Shoot took place Dec. 8.
Female winners include Tabitha Salcedo, Taylor Hadley, Cayla Goff, Jeiden Small, Z’niya Vilomar and Hope Hodges.
Last year, Hodges went on all the way to the state championship, where she lost by one free throw.
Male winners were Robert Ornorff, Jonathon Tyler, Jacob Cope and Gordon Beck IV.
All first-place winners advance to the next level of competition, which will take place Jan. 5, 2013, in Sanford.
The Elks National Hoop Shoot provides a character building competitive experience for all children who become involved. The children who compete learn about respect, dedication, loyalty and self-esteem.
The contestants dedicate themselves to discipline, hard work and practice. These life skills help children face the challenges of today to become responsible, caring adults.
Bulldogs wrestling upends New Smryna Beach, improves to 7-0
Fresh off its dominating win over Matanzas, the Flagler Palm Coast wrestling team continued its winning ways on Friday, defeating New Smyrna Beach to improve to 7-0 on the season.

In soccer, FPC edges DeLand, 1-0
DeLand played a high offsides trap on Friday, but Flagler Palm Coast was able to eke out a 1-0 win on Johnny Osorio’s goal.
FPC’s stingy defense recorded another shutout, its sixth in 10 games.
The Bulldogs outshot DeLand, 15-6. FPC goalkeeper Austin Davis had five saves.
FPC improved to 8-1-1 with the win.
In hoops, Pirates fall to St. Augustine 60-41
The Matanzas boys basketball team continues to struggle, losing to St. Augustine, 60-41, on Friday.
Matanzas led 14-13 after the first quarter, but St. Augustine outscored the Pirates, 29-14, in the second and third quarters. Ivan Tsabak scored 10 points.
The loss dropped Matanzas to 2-7 this season.
Matanzas drops district game to Ponte Vedra, 63-49
Coming off a disappointing weekend loss to crosstown Flagler Palm Coast, the Matanzas Lady Pirates basketball team lost to Ponte Vedra on Monday, 63-49, in a District 4-5A matchup.
Matanzas (4-7) trailed 30-20 at halftime and couldn’t mount a second-half comeback.
Senior Margaret Calhoun led the Lady Pirates in scoring with 19 points, all of which came on four 3-pointers.
Natalia Mejia dropped 12 points. Shanteria Few scored eight points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Lady Pirates soccer secures No. 4 seed for district tourney, earns spot in conference final
The Matanzas Lady Pirates soccer team defeated Pedro Menendez, 6-1, on Friday night.
With the win, Matanzas finished first in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference and also secured the No. 4 seed in the District 4-3A tournament, which will take place in January.
In the game against Menendez, six different Lady Pirates scored, including forward Gabbi Paiz, who notched her 28th goal of the season on an assist from June Errasti.
Matanzas (10-4-1) defeated DeLand, 7-0, on Monday night. Paiz scored four goals and now has 32 goals and 14 assists this season. Keeper Bella Benvenuto notched her ninth shutout.
Matanzas will host crosstown FPC 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, to resume play before the district tournament. On Jan. 8, Matanzas will play at home against Bartam Trail in the St. Johns River Athletic Conference championship game. Matanzas will then host Clay on Jan. 14 in the first round of the district tournament.
