Melendez signs with Snead State
Amanda Melendez, a former basketball player at both Matanzas and Flagler Palm Coast high schools, officially signed on Thursday to play basketball at Snead State Community College, in Boaz, Ala.

As a senior at FPC, Melendez averaged seven points, six rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. She also was second in the Flagler/Volusia area in total blocks.

Lady Bulldogs coach Javier Bevacqua said in the one year Melendez was with FPC, she worked hard and was fun to be around.

"Amanda brings a tough interior defensive presence to Snead State along with a willingness to learn and improve," Bevacqua said. "Snead State gains a great teammate who is always ready to help others."

FPC cross-country team begins season
The Flagler Palm Coast cross-country team officially held its first practice Monday, Aug. 13, as the Bulldogs embark on another season.

Coach David Halliday said experience should help the team this season.

The boys team, which is currently ranked No. 5 in Class 4A based (based on returning runners), returns all but two runners from last year’s team, including five of the top seven. Thomas Carroll (senior), Brad Walbert (senior), Joseph Alter (senior), Jan Carlo Vicens (senior) and Ashton Garrett (sophomore) will be accompanied by junior Luis Cordero and senior Tyrell Robinson.

The girls team returns several veteran runners, including Josie Davis (sophomore), Paige Way (senior) and Darien Halliday (sophomore), as well as newcomers Sophia Clark (sophomore) and Kacia Wynn (senior). Halliday hopes the girls team can translate a successful track season during the spring into a strong fall on the cross-country courses.

The official Florida Athletic Coaches Association rankings will be released in two weeks, according to Halliday.

Runners interested in joining the FPC cross-country team should email Halliday at [email protected].

Also, the FPC cross-country team will host its first race, the Trails, Bales and Rodeos 5K, which will take place 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Flagler County Fairgrounds, 150 Sawgrass Road, Bunnell.

Cost is $25 until Aug. 17, and then the price increases to $30 until Aug. 25. Race day entry fee is $35. All proceeds benefit the Flagler Palm Coast High School cross-country team.
