The Beaches Adult Soccer League 7v7 finals took place June 4, at Wadsworth Park.
Despite playing without a starting midfielder and starting forward, and the temperatues in the low-90s, the Flagler Dawgs mounted a comeback and defeated No. 1-seeded Domination FC June 2 in the finals of the 7v7 Beaches Adult Soccer League, at Wadsworth Park.
The Flagler Dawgs entered the day as the No. 2 seed, and defeated the third-seeded Black Lions, 3-2, in the first semifinal.
In the other semifinal, No. 1 seed Domination FC scorched BASL Ballers, the No. 4 seed, with a final score of 6-1.
Then, the Flagler Dawgs and Domination FC met in the championship game — Flagler Dawgs came into the championship game at 5-2 and Domination FC had a record of 6-1.
The Dawgs took a 1-0 lead, then found themselves down 2-1.
With a halftime score of 3-3, Domination FC went ahead 4-3. The Dawgs then scored three unanswered goals and led 6-4 with 10 minutes remaining. Domination FC pulled one goal back, but fell short in the end, and the Flagler Dawgs won the league, beating Domination FC, 6-5.
“We pulled it out ... it was just a good team effort,” said Bryan Meyer, of Flagler Dawgs. “If the game had gone five minutes longer, the game could’ve gone a completely different way because both teams were so evenly matched.”
Greg Savy, the goalkeeper for Flagler Dawgs, made several key saves in the semifinals and finals.
Perhaps the biggest difference between the two championship-game teams was that Domination FC was forced to use field players in the goal. Savy played keeper for Flagler Palm Coast High School.
“It took a lot of determination and team play to compete and win with the brutal heat,” Savy said.
The defense of the Flagler Dawgs was forced to shut down Brian Gil, who just got back from playing with Real Salt Lake, of Major League Soccer.
Though the season just ended, there’s not a long offseason. The third installment of the BASL Palm Coast/St. Augustine 7v7 league will begin June 18.
Meyer, who also organizes the league, hopes that there will be at least six teams playing later this month, if not eight.
Games take place from 4 to 7 p.m. every Saturday, and Meyer said the competition has continued to increase.
