Flagler was one of 30 systems in Florida, out of 67 districts, to earn an ‘A.’
At exactly 10 a.m., at the June 30 School Board meeting, Superintendent Janet Valentine put a halt on discussion to make an announcement.
“In regard to our middle and elementary schools, we received all A’s and one B. And I just want to congratulate everyone,” she said. “We’re an A district! It’s just so exciting.”
In spite of higher writing standards in place, 2011’s perfect district ranking marks the fourth consecutive year that Flagler County public schools has earned this superlative. School grades were embargoed until early Thursday, and Valentine announced that Bunnell Elementary School was the only school in the county to receive less than an A rating.
Imagine School, the charter facility at the Town Center, received a C.
Bell Terre Elementary recorded the highest point total of all county schools, at 601, up 46 points from its 2010 total.
Rymfire Elementary improved from a C school, in 2010, to an A this year.
The district’s point total is 530, up five points from last year.
School grades are measured on an FCAT-based point system, compiling percentages from nine categories, including high standards met in reading, math, science and writing; gains made in math and reading; and the percentage of the lowest scoring quarter of students who showed learning gains in reading and math.
High school grades will be released in December and will also take into account non-FCAT standards.
According to Sabrina Crosby, administrative coordinator, Flagler County is one of 30 systems statewide, in a pool of 67 Florida districts, that earned an A.
A-rated districts are also eligible for funding from the Florida School Recognition Program. Schools that have sustained, high student performance or demonstrated substantial improvement in student grades are eligible under the program to earn an additional $70 per student.
In 2011, 1,146 schools maintained an A grade; 23 schools that were not graded last year earned an A; 312 schools improved to an A; and 187 schools improved to a grade other than an A.
