Bulldogs nip Pirates in softball showdown

The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Pirates, 5-3, Thursday, Feb. 17, in a close showdown of the two area softball programs.

The Matanzas Lady Pirates softball team came roaring back for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning against Flagler Palm Coast High School Thursday, Feb. 17, but fell short in a 5-3 defeat.

Matanzas (3-3) was powered by one RBI each from Gabrielle Prickett and Christina Reynolds.

FPC (4-0) was powered by Deetra Ware’s two RBIs.

FPC’s Kelsey Donahue had seven strikeouts, allowed five hits and also went two-for-three at the plate with two RBIs.

The Lady Bulldogs took a 5-0 lead after back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third. Matanzas tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and then added two more in the bottom of the seventh. Matanzas also had the bases loaded in the third inning but didn’t score a run.

“We played our hearts out and had the will to win in the end,” said Matanzas coach Sara Novak.

“Overall, both teams played a great game of softball at a high level of competition,” Novak said.
