The dirt is already being loaded onto two lots in Sam Cline’s Steel Rain Industrial Park, in preparation for a BMX bicycle-racing track.

Cline said he’ll use the dirt either way at the park, which is at the end of Otis Stone Hunter Road, about equidistant from Whiteview Lane and Royal Palms Parkway, on U.S. 1. But whether the dirt becomes a racing track will depend on the final OK from the city of Bunnell and on funding from promoter Renny Roker.

The park was built during the construction boom. Cline, who is president of S.E. Cline Construction, said he had four tenants signed up, but when the economy failed, they all backed out. There are currently no leases signed out of 18 possible sites.

The original plan was for 22 sites, but he said he combined some of them to make a larger site that might be more appealing to a larger developer. Still, however, he has no bites.

In the meantime, a bike track more than likely wouldn’t generate any revenue for Cline.

“What it's doing for us is creating some activity in the park,” Cline said.

He said he hopes to officially start the track by about June 1.

Roker pitched the idea to the city of Palm Coast previously and also organized a citywide bike event last year called the Joy Ride. Click here for previous coverage of the Joy Ride.
