+ FPC boys basketball
The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs boys basketball team is off to a 3-5 start this season, but is 3-2 in its last five games.
Coach Gary McDaniel said the Bulldogs have a tough test right after the winter break, when they travel Jan. 5, to Mainland High School.
The Bulldogs come back from the break with four consecutive road games: 7 p.m. Jan. 3, at Deltona; 7 p.m. Jan. 5, at Mainland; 7 p.m. Jan. 8, at Seabreeze; and 7 p.m. Jan. 11, at New Smyrna Beach.
+ FPC boys soccer
The Bulldogs (7-7-2, 5-6-1 in the district) won 3-1 Dec. 15, against Seabreeze. Before beating Seabreeze, the Bulldogs lost 1-0 Dec. 10, to DeLand, and also lost 2-0 Dec. 13, to Spruce Creek.
Monsanto said the Bulldogs coaching staff has had to put together a different starting lineup each game because of injuries.
Mark Ayupov leads the Bulldogs with six goals, seven assists; Alex Varon has six goals, five assists; Nico Medina has two goals, five assists; and Lorenzo Butler, Drew Jones and Mark Kalaj all have five goals.
In January, the Bulldogs, who are currently in fourth place in the district, hope to enter the district tournament healthy. FPC has four district games remaining on the schedule: Jan. 5, against DeLand; Jan. 6, at University; Jan. 12, at Deltona; and Jan. 14, against Mainland.
“It’s a great team effort in a transition year,” Monsanto said.
+ Pirates boys soccer
The Matanzas Pirates boys soccer team is 6-4-2. Recently, the Pirates defeated Clay, 5-3, but lost to St. Augustine, 4-1.
Immediately after the break, the Pirates have a tough game Jan. 3, against district foe Ponte Vedra. The Pirates also play Jan. 7, against Nease.
The Pirates have had 12 different players score this season, with T.J. Von Diezelski (5 goals), Justin Watts (3 goals) and Josh O’Hara (3 goals) leading the way.
+ Pirates girls soccer
The Pirates girls soccer team is 7-7-1 heading into the break, and is 3-4 in the district. Coach Tony Benvenuto said the record doesn’t indicate how well his team has been playing.
Freshman forward Gabi Paiz leads the team in goals and assists, followed by Sara Carey.
The Lady Pirates are in fourth place in the district after two big district wins against Pedro Menendez and St. Augustine. Benvenuto said that the team’s goal heading into the year was to win 10 games and to win a district playoff game.
The Lady Pirates will play their final district game Jan. 3, against Nease.
+ Pirates girls basketball
The Lady Pirates basketball team is 1-9, with an 0-6 district record. In their last three games, they are 1-2, but have key games against Ponte Vedra, Nease and Creekside in January. Nicole Bonilla and Megan Nemic have been the most consistent players.
