Ormond Beach residents stay on the lookout for Girl Scout cookies.
Keep calm: The girl scouts are here, and they’ve got cookies.
February marks the start of Girl Scout cookie season, and inventory's going fast, according to Dana Allen, of Troop 825, in Ormond Beach. She said her girls sold 2,800 boxes in just seven days.
“I have 12 girls, second- and third-graders,” Allen said. “My kids are awesome. This gives them the opportunity to finance their own activities. They learn how to plan, how to budget, how to respect and how to deal with people.”
Allen, who has been a volunteer troop leader for 32 years, was never a girl scout as a child, but she got involved with the group for another reason.
“I couldn’t have children,” Allen said. “But I wanted to work with kids. I’m particularly fond of working with girls. I truly hope in my heart that we never lose this organization, because I think girls need it. They need the guidance, and we need them, too. I’ve learned a lot from the girls.”
And according to the giggly chatter of Allen’s girls, camping is the next big skill to learn.
“I like being a Girl Scout because it’s fun, and I like helping people,” said Ellie Fernandez, 7. “I like helping others. I like selling cookies, and I’m really good at it. And we get to go camping for the first time.”
“I like selling cookies so we can take more trips and go camping,” said Christie Stevenson, 8, from Troop 1886.
This troop can be found in various Ormond Beach shopping plazas over the next few weekends. To order a box, visit www.citrus-gs.org, or call 1-800-367-3906.
