Need for speed: Pathways Elementary holds 21st annual derby

A total of 23 teams and 46 students competed in Pathways Elementary's 21st annual 'Most Spectacular Awe Inspiring Derby' on Thursday, May 21.

The sun was blazing. The sweat was dripping. The candy was flying. 

A total of 23 teams and 46 students took part in Pathways Elementary's 21st annual "Most Spectacular Awe Inspiring Derby" on Thursday, May 21. As is tradition, the fifth graders competed in “future” cars (new to the derby) and “classic” cars, which have competed in the past. 

This year's race featured 20 new derby cars — a record, according to Pathways Elementary teacher Matt Coleman, who organizes the race every year.

Students took part in a car parade, two drift races and a push race. This year's grand marshal was retired Ormond Beach Police Capt. DW Smith. 

This year's derby winners were:

Pathways Spirit

First place: Heelers, MacKenzie Madison and Maci Villarreal

Second place: Awesome Americans, Teagan Royer and Nova Weston

Third place: 101 Dalmatians, Alanna Petreska and Jocelyn Powell

Most Team Spirit

First place: 101 Dalmatians, Alanna Petreska and Jocelyn Powell

Second place: Ketchup, Leifur Arnason and Barry Kra

Third place: Team Radioactive, Sawyer Niswander and Adrian Stefancik

Most Creative and Original Design

First place: Ketchup, Leifur Arnason and Barry Kra

Second place: Holy Cow, Kinsley Munson and Lizzy Wheeler

Third place: Team Radioactive, Sawyer Niswander and Adrian Stefancik

Drift Race (Classic Car)

First place: Cloud 9 Cowgirls, Whitley Klarich and Vivienne Ellery

Second place: Sports Sisters, Addison Whiting and Delsa Tabatabaei

Third place: Strawberry Sisters, Joyce Hardy and Marina Rosenberg

Drift Race (Future car)

First place: The Burnout Boys, Christian Vandervoort and Kyler Grant

Second place: Awesome Americans, Teagan Royer and Nova Weston

Third place: Ketchup, Leifur Arnason and Barry Kra

Push Race (Classic car)
