Members of the American Legion Auxiliary recently interviewed junior girls at Matanzas High School for Girls State.

Out of seven girls interviewed, two were chosen to attend: Shelby Miller and Cheyenna Espinoza. Other girls interviewed were Kayla Gayle-Campbell, Giovanni Gonzalez, Danica Leili, Nikki Cummings and Allysa Santos.

Girls State is a practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. The entire program is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical, nonsectarian attempt to teach and inculcate in the young women of America a love of God and country.

Girls State was organized as a national Americanism activity of the American Legion Auxiliary in 1937 to inspire and develop interest in the study of government and foster civic leadership, but most of all, to stimulate a desire to protect the privileges and responsibilities of the country’s democratic form of government.
