SIDELINES: Ormond Beach Soccer Club 2013 team qualifies for NPL nationals

ORMOND BEACH SOCCER CLUB TEAM QUALIFIES FOR NPL NATIONALS

The Ormond Beach Soccer Club's 2013 Boys Red team has qualified to compete in the National Premier League's national finals July 8-14 in Denver.

This is the first year the club is playing in the NPL division in the Florida Club Leagues. The NPL is a national competition platform for top-level youth soccer clubs in the U13 to U19 age groups.

The 2013 Boys Red team (U13) qualified for nationals by winning the Florida Leagues' NPL playoffs April 25-26 in Odessa, Florida. The Ormond team made the playoffs as a wildcard. IT defeated the St. Petersburg Football Club 3-1 and then defeated its Central Region opponent, the Port St. Lucis Hurricanes, on penalty kicks. The score was tied 1-1 through two overtimes. Ormond won the penalty-kick shootout 4-3 to qualify for nationals in Denver.

The team’s coaches are Thomas Chameraud and Dylan Reed. The players are Gatlin Brodick, Kai Cheng, Lucas Caputo, Cooper Erickson, William Johnston, Kenan Davis, Corbin McNitt, Jackson Shorter, Isaac Wittnebert, Jack Cianciatto, Kason Davis, Cooper Rowley, Reagan Williams, Kellan Velez, Finn McNitt, Ivan Cruz, Maxwell Bosang and Enzo Denard.

The cost of the trip to Denver, including flights, lodging and tournament fees, will be about $30,000, Ormond Beach Soccer Club Vice President Jill Bosang said. If you are interested in donating, email Bosang at [email protected] or Dylan Reed at [email protected].


BREAKOUT FLAG FOOTBALL SEASON FOR FPC

Flagler Palm Coast’s most successful flag football season in many years ended with a 12-6 overtime loss to Ocala Forest in the Region 1-4A quarterfinals on April 29.

Forest went on to beat Ocoee 19-0 in the regional semifinals to advance to the regional final against Tocoi Creek. In the quarterfinal, Stephanie Turner and Janae White each had an interception for the visiting Bulldogs. FPC scored on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Tori Spann to Turner.

The Bulldogs finished with a 12-6 record. They reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012. Their calling card was defense with seven players combining to intercept 33 passes.They allowed more than 14 points in just three games. Spann, a junior, and Turner, a freshman, led the team with eight interceptions apiece and were both also impactful on offense.

The Bulldogs lose four-year starting quarterback Nereyda Campos, who will play for Daytona State College next year, but they return everyone else on the roster.


SOFTBALL PLAYOFF RECAP

FPC softball coach Brooklynn Jimeson and freshman Ava Zublionis were named Florida Athletic Coaches Association coach and player of the year, respectively, for Class 7A, District 6. Zublionis batted .475 with a .755 slugging percentage and 26 runs scored. The Bulldogs finished 8-14, but they return almost their entire team next year.

Seabreeze defeated Orlando Bishop Moore 1-0 in the District 6-4A championship game to advance to the state playoffs. The Sandcrabs (11-12) are scheduled to play at top seed Eau Gallie on May 6 in the Region 2-4A quarterfinals.

The Sandcrabs scored the only run of the game against Bishop Moore in the sixth inning. Freshman Samantha Sullivan drove in fellow freshman Alyssa Checho with a base hit. Checho pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and four walks in seven innings.

Matanzas (10-12) ended its season with two high-scoring losses to Beachside, 13-12 in the final regular-season game and 11-9 in the District 4-5A semifinal. The Pirates’ Camryn Williams combined for five hits and five RBIs in the two games, while Alondra Vincenty had three doubles and drove in five runs and McKenzie Manhart had four hits with a triple, scored five runs and drove in three.


JORDAN MILLS COMMITS TO OHIO WESLEYAN

Former Matanzas High School football standout and state wrestling champ Jordan Mills has committed to Ohio Wesleyan, an NCAA Division III school, to play both sports. Mills’ primary position in football is defensive back. As a senior in the 2023 season, had had 11 tackles for a loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. He also caught 25 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns.

Mills won the Class 2A state wrestling championship with a 52-0 record as a senior in 2024 after coming back from shoulder surgery that ended his junior wrestling season. Jordan and Mariah Mills became the first brother and sister to win state wrestling championships in the same season. Jordan and his brother Tyson were both state runners-up in 2022 when Jordan was a sophomore.
