Volusia County Schools has disabled comments on its Facebook page.
The district issued the following statement on the matter:
"To better serve our students, families, and community, comments on the official Volusia County Schools Facebook page are disabled.
Volusia County Schools will continue to provide updates, information, and recognitions through its official communication channels. Only official Volusia County Schools channels represent the district. For questions or assistance, please contact the appropriate department using the information provided so we can respond as accurately and promptly as possible."
Alongside the statement, the district posted a chart containing the contact information for its various department heads.
In a statement to the Observer, a Volusia County Schools spokesperson said that the district social media pages are intended to provide information, updates and recognitions of students, staff and the district.
"As a public entity, the district must ensure that its communication channels are managed in a manner that is consistent with legal requirements and operational capacity," said Mike Micallef, chief communications officer. "The decision to disable comments on the district’s Facebook page reflects a shift in how we manage and respond to inquiries to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and appropriate routing of concerns."
The district didn't disable comments to limit community engagement, he added, but to enable "more effective and direct communication between families and appropriate departments."
"We offer multiple avenues for the community to ask questions, share concerns and feedback, including direct contact with district staff," Micallef said. "We’ve also provided a contact list that connects directly with the appropriate staff by phone and email. This ensures every family receives accurate and timely information directly from district department leaders."
