When religious ideology and partisan politics appear before a school board, that’s a problem. And that's the case with Flagler County School Board member and current board candidate Will Furry when he recently recommended the inclusion of a controversial anti-abortion video in school curriculum.
The video, promoted by a pro-life activist who was “inspired by the Holy Spirit” and “guided by faith” as the inspiration for her activism, presents disputed medical claims. Live Action, the group behind the video production, has been barred from social media platforms for the spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation, doctored videos and the display of sensationalized content.
The source of this video speaks to its intent. It’s politically and religiously charged and only succeeds in creating controversy and divisiveness in a school board that has more than its share of that.
The very foundation of education should always be based on objectivity and fact based teachings, and religion and politics should never be disguised as science. Curriculum decisions in public schools should remain unbiased on divisive social and political issues and abortion is no exception, whether board members are pro-choice or anti-abortion.
