The City of Ormond Beach will rename a road named after a local family due to backlash over a proposed townhome development with the same name.

City Commissioner Kristin Deaton made the request to rename Yoon Way to the city staff on Tuesday, April 21, on behalf of the Yoon family. The change comes after some community opposition to a 12-unit townhome development on a 2.81-acre property along Yoon Way, known as the Yoon Way Townhomes development.

"The Yoons don't have anything to do with the proposed development, nor its ownership," Deaton said. "They're a longstanding Ormond Beach family with multiple Ormond Beach-based businesses."

Engineering Realty, LLC, of Maitland, is listed as the developer of the townhomes.

Deaton added that people have been coming into the family's businesses to complain about the development. Yoon Way serves as an access road to the medical building at 1180 W. Granada Blvd., which includes Yoon Dentistry.

"I just want to say it's unfortunate that they are getting harassed by people about that," Mayor Jason Leslie said.

The renaming will need to go before the Planning Board for recommendation before arriving to the City Commission for a vote. City staff will provide suggestions for a new name.

A neighborhood meeting to discuss the townhomes was held at the Ormond Beach library on April 15.

The developer is seeking a small-scale comprehensive plan amendment and rezoning to construct the townhomes. The property along Yoon Way is currently zoned Special Environmental. The developer is seeking a rezoning to R-4 Single Family Cluster and Town House District.
