When Jodi Lewitt was thinking about becoming an administrator, Seabreeze High School was at the top of her wish list.
The faculty. The students. The alumni. The community support. All of that stood out to Lewitt.
"Our mantra of 'Once a Sandcrab, always a Sandcrab' — It is so true," Lewitt said. "... A lot of our faculty were students here. The alumni want to come back. They want to participate. They bring their kids here. We have three or four generations of families here because they want their kids to graduate from Seabreeze."
Now, Lewitt is taking the lead as the school's new principal, succeeding Tucker Harris, who is now the director of secondary schools for Volusia County Schools. Lewitt is entering her 23rd year in education. She started working for VCS in 2004.
And she's not a stranger on the sandbar. Lewitt previously served as the school's assistant principal since 2022.
Seabreeze is currently an A-rated school, for the third year in a row. It's also the 11th highest-ranked non-charter, non-magnet high school in the state, according to the district.
So Lewitt's goal for the upcoming school year is simply to keep the momentum going.
"We're going to keep on keeping on because it's working," Lewitt said.
As a former teacher, 14 years of which were spent at the elementary level, Lewitt said that coaching remains a big part of the job. Whether it's a student or a teacher, as a principal, you're still trying to inspire and motivate using similar strategies.
Going into education, she said, was always going to be her path.
"I don't think there was ever a question," Lewitt said. "... I love mentoring and helping others, and love learning — I have a passion for learning."
Lewitt expressed her excitement at becoming Seabreeze's new principal in a recent message to students and their families. She encouraged them to stay connected and involved in the school.
"Throughout my career, I have learned that the strongest schools are built on meaningful relationships, open communication, and a shared commitment to student success," Lewitt wrote. "I am excited to bring that same continued commitment to Seabreeze."
