Pump prices in Florida eased below the $4-a-gallon average on Monday as oil tumbled on the global market with a tentative ceasefire in force and fuel expected to flow again through the Strait of Hormuz.

But doubts arose regarding the slow decline of gas prices after the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo ship.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, posted Sunday that prices may rise again Monday afternoon as crude oil prices increased 7 percent in the opening moments of Sunday trading.

Also on Sunday, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said motorists shouldn’t expect gas prices to quickly return to the sub-$3 a gallon mark they were at prior to hostilities in Iran.

“I don’t know. That could happen later this year. That might not happen until next year,” Wright said when pressed on CNN State of the Union.

The national average on Monday was $4.04 a gallon, according to the auto club AAA.

In Florida, the average was $3.99 Monday morning.

The state average had been steadily decreasing since hitting $4.15 last Wednesday. The state’s average hadn’t been under $4 since March 30 and $3 since March 2.

Averages Monday in Florida ranged from $3.70 a gallon in Bay County to $4.28 in Monroe County.

To help consumers, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services gave retailers a 90-day extension, starting May 1, to sell the cheaper winter blend of gas. Less energy-efficient than the summer blend, the winter blend’s major benefit is that it helps engine ignition during colder temperatures.

An average gallon of diesel was $5.48 on Monday in Florida, down 19 cents from a week earlier. The national average for diesel was $5.53 on Monday.

For electric vehicles, the cost per kilowatt-hour at Florida charging stations rounded up to 41 cents on Monday. The price was 39 cents on Feb. 28. Nationally, the average also rounded to 41 cents. The average was 39 cents on Feb. 28.
