John Morris attended the University of Delaware and was commissioned through the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. Upon graduation, he was to be shipped to Vietnam. In transit, orders were changed, and he was instead assigned as a transportation officer at Naha Port in Okinawa, Japan, where he managed materials and supplies transiting the Pacific for operations supporting the war in Vietnam. Morris had to delay his marriage to his fiancée, Sally, due to his military commitment. However, Sally traveled to Japan, and they were married in March of 1967. Following his honorable military service, Morris put his military training and knowledge to use in a career in ocean shipping, working for many different shipping companies over the years, which took him around the world. Morris and his family spent many years living in Montclair, New Jersey, and he worked in New York City. He and his wife, Sally, moved to Palm Coast in 2017. Morris volunteers for the Flagler County Library in the Palm Coast location bookstore, and he’s a lay reader and choir member at the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church. Morris is a past president of the Flagler Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and is a current delegate to the Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council.
