“It’s a process,” said Michael Talley, Flagler Palm Coast’s first-year boys basketball coach.
It’s a process the Bulldogs seem to be embracing. One day after they committed nine turnovers in the fourth quarter on the way to a 50-40 loss to Lake Mary, the Bulldogs took over in the fourth quarter to defeat Palatka 51-40.
“We played pretty good (against Lake Mary) up to the fourth quarter,” Talley said. “(The next day), we watched film. We went over our mistakes.”
FPC improved to 2-2 with the win against Palatka on Nov. 30 at the Bulldogs gym. The Bulldogs put the clamps down in the fourth quarter, holding the Panthers (1-1) to just four points.
Matthew Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer from the corner midway through the fourth quarter to give FPC a 48-36 lead. Instead of turning the ball over in the final period, FPC capitalized on Palatka’s turnovers and held sharp-shooter Arterrian Godfrey (four 3-pointers through the first three quarters) without a long-range basket.
“We ran another player at him to speed him up a little bit,” Talley said.
Senior Jameer Clark and sophomore Nateshawn Royal led the Bulldogs with 12 points apiece. Junior Corinthians Watson added nine points.
Clark scored 10 of his points in the first half and then became a facilitator.
“It’s all about the team,” Clark said. “I believe in my team. I kept feeding them the ball.”
Godfrey (16 points) and Trenton Williams (15) scored 31 of the Panthers’ 40 points.
FPC returns home on Thursday, Dec. 7, with a game against New Smyrna Beach.
