Roy Singletary

  • Branch of Military: U.S Marines
  • Dates of Service: 1943-1946
  • Rank/Occupation: Private 1st Class Mortarman
  • Hometown: Tampa, Florida

After World War II started, Roy Singletary tried to enlist at age 17, but was initially rejected. At age 19, Singletary and some of his hometown friends joined the Marines. "I wanted to defend my country," Singletary said, when asked why he enlisted. He served for three years active duty, and said that he thanks God for the fact that he never even got a scratch. However, many of his friends and comrades did not make it back. After being sent home, Singletary married and raised a family, and is still an active member of his church. He recently celebrated his 98th birthday.
