AAUW Flagler welcomes Randy Jaye, a historian of United States history who specializes in local, regional, and national aspects of historic preservation, to speak about his book, “Perseverance: Episodes of Black History from the Rural South.” The event will be Saturday, April 2, 10:30 a.m. at Cypress Knoll Golf Club.
Many of the local episodes of Black history in this presentation occurred in Flagler County.

The Gargiulo Art Foundation invites all artists and friends to a service in memory of founder Tom Gargiulo, to be held 1-2 p.m. March 26, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast.
Gargiulo, an artist whose work was featured in more than 150 solo shows in galleries around the world and who recognized and uplifted Flagler County artists through the Gargiulo Art Foundation, died of a heart attack Feb. 13, in Palm Coast, Florida. He was 83.
“Tom was someone you had in your corner,” said J.J. Graham, owner of the Salvo Art Project, in Bunnell. Gargiulo had “done it all” as an artist, Graham said, and yet, “He was very good at leaving his ego aside.”
Much of the art in public spaces in Palm Coast is due to Gargiulo’s passion: the panther near the Hammock Dunes Bridge, the burro in Town Center, the birds at Waterfront Park, the sculptures and paintings at the Flagler County Public Library, the art collection at Daytona State College.
The third-annual Casino Night, supporting Vietnam veterans and military families, will be 6-10 p.m. March 26, at VFW Post 8696, 47 Old Kings Road N. Advance tickets are $45; at the door, $50. KIX Country 98.7 will be showcasing the many hit songs written by the artists attending the Palm Coast Songwriters Festival. The festival is April 28-May 1 (visit www.palmcoastsongwritersfestival.com for tickets). The shows on KIX, hosted by Kandi Lowe, will be 6 p.m. Sundays, March 20 to April 24.
“This will be a great showcase of the tremendous talent coming to perform at our festival,” said Garry Lubi, festival chair. He added that many people may not realize that the performers of hit songs often didn’t write the songs. “At our festival you get to hear the story behind the song, and then they perform it,” he said.
The Palm Coast Observer will also be doing a video Q+A with Lowe about her show soon.
At its annual St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance March 9, at the Italian American Club, the Irish Social Club installed its officers for fiscal year 2022-2023, with Carol Bryant as president. Jim Mays was master of ceremonies to also install Pat Leifert as recording secretary, Barbara Doud as acting secretary, Pat Mauer as second vice president, Flo Pines as first vice president, George Pines as past president, Pete Stolz as treasurer, Tom Rodenfels as publicity director, Abbie Wycoff as past president and Eileen Byrnes as chaplain.
