A 25-year-old Port Orange man was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison and 15 years of probation after he was convicted of two counts of vehicular homicide for the death of a 14-week pregnant woman, whom he struck with his car as she crossed West Granada Boulevard at Seminole Drive on May 27, 2019. The woman was using the crosswalk.

Justin Egatz, who also injured a man in the crash, was also convicted of one count of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and one count of reckless driving causing property damage. Police previously reported that he was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash, which also involved two other cars.

“The defendant’s reckless actions on the day of the accident needlessly took two lives and caused a lot of pain for the survivors, their families and friends,” said Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey in a press release. “I am hopeful this successful conviction and resolution will ease some of the pain of all of those that were hurt that day. I am deeply thankful for all of the hard work and professionalism displayed by members of the Ormond Beach Police Department, Ormond Beach Fire Department, Volusia County Emergency Medical Services, and the State Attorney’s Office.”
