Bulldogs took over the Five Star Championship track meet with the boys and girls bringing home first and second place Wednesday, April 13 at Spruce Creek High School.
The FPC boys 4x800 meter relay team kicked off the meet with a win. Sean Gilliam, Kasey Wheatley, Peyton Woodward and Barak Olago finished in 8:20.31. Isaiah Joseph, Monte Curry, Veejay Weeden and Dennis Murray wrapped up the meet by coming in second to Atlantic High School in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:21.55. Weeden ran the third leg in the relay and passed the baton to Murray who was the team’s anchor.
“I feel like we definitely could have done better,” Weeden said. “Maybe closed the gap a little more but for missing two runners, we performed really well and PRd with two people out. We had PRs across the board.”
The Mainland boys were runners-up to the ‘Dogs with the girls’ team placing fourth.
“We were number one seed in the 4x100 and we gave it up,” head coach Terrence Anthony said. “We got DQd. They all PRd in the 100 meters and they were ready to PR in the 4x100. It’s a learning experience. Right now, it’s not detrimental.”
Buccaneer sprinters shined including a first and second for Jonathan Williams in the 110 (15.16) and 300 meter hurdles (41.06) and a second and fourth for Nathanial Davis in the 100 and 200 meter dashes (22.10).
“I like the 100 (meter dash),” Davis said. “I PRd today with a 10.6—my personal best since high school. Hopefully, by the time states come, I’ll be running a 10.4 and take the title. I started off the season horrible. I was out of shape—running 11.6. To get back down inside a ten since last year is amazing.”
Mainland powerhouse thrower, Avari Walker, took home seconds in both the javelin and shot put (10.82) events.
“I am naturally strong—I don’t lift weights,” she said. “I PRd last week. My favorite is flag (football) but I do track to stay in shape. I just always loved football since I was little. I played tackle with my brothers then.”
“We really love our team. We are like a family—like a family you’d want to be a part of.”
ARIANA ROY, Seabreeze track athlete
Seabreeze boys—Tristan Taylor, Crawford Olsen, Isaac Oliver and Keandre Workman—soundly beat the competition in the 4x100 meter relay by placing first with a 43.05. The girls finished third in the 4x800 meter relay with a 10:33.09. State qualified weightlifter, Dante Jones, added 10 points to his team’s overall score by grabbing a first in the discus throw. The girls placed sixth and the boys seventh at the meet.
Sandcrab freshman Ariana Roy placed fourth in the 1600 meter run (5:25.27) while her twin sister Mackenzie finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (52.29).
“We really love our team,” Ariana said. “We are like a family—like a family you’d want to be a part of.”
