On March 2, Charles L. and Miki Grant announced a $4 million gift to enhance cancer services at Halifax Health, the community’s health system.  The gift will be used to enhance patient services for people in their journey with cancer. In addition, the Halifax Health Center for Oncology will now be named after the Grants and most noticeably the building and program name will become The Charles L. and Miki Grant Cancer Center for Hope.

The Halifax Health Center for Oncology was founded in 1975 by physicians, including Herbert Kermin, to provide the most advanced cancer care in Volusia County.  The center has grown over the years to be the most advanced, comprehensive and most preferred cancer center in east central Florida, which includes: seven medical oncologists, two radiation oncologists and the only gynecologic oncologist in the area plus the first IntraOperative Radiation Therapy breast cancer treatment, Brain Lab and the Davinci Robot.

"The Cancer Center for Hope, as it will be called, is a comprehensive cancer center dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients and is focused on treating and supporting patients by providing system navigation and many patient support initiatives like survivorship programs, tumor boards, genetic screening, nutrition assistance and more," said Jeff Feasel, president and chief executive officer. "The grant’s gift will be used to enhance these wrap around services by creating new positions for a licensed social worker, a multidisciplinary navigator and a colorectal navigator. As cancer care evolves, the social determinants of health like transportation, food security and mental health have become more important and this is a gift for the whole community to share.”

Charles Grant has been a resident of Ormond Beach since 2004 and Miki Grant, a resident since 1996. Charles Grant has extensive experience with large global Fortune 500 companies in medical devices, industrial equipment and laboratory equipment products. In addition, he has private equity and venture investing experience in the spirits industry, education, mental health, energy and telemarketing. Locally, he has served as a past president, chairman of the bond committee and chairman of the Sally golf tournament at Ocean Side Country Club.

“Miki and I wanted to do something for the community which has embraced us," he said. "I have been on the Halifax Health Foundation Board and view the health system as one of, if not the greatest assets in our community.”

The other element that was important to the Grants’ decision was to help people with resources for early detection and education about cancer which touches so many people. It was Charles Grant's idea to add “Hope” to the name of the building and program.

“As a cancer survivor, I know how important positive attitude and hope are to surviving the disease," he said.

He added that he hopes the name provides inspiration and positive vibes to the amazing programs in the center.”

“Chuck and Miki have made a significant gift to help Halifax Health fulfill its promise to be the community’s healthcare leader and fulfill our mission to take care of everyone who needs our care," said Joe Petrock, executive director of the Halifax Health Foundation. "Your gift will impact thousands in our community who have or will be diagnosed with cancer. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts."
