After weeks of residents pleading for a six-month delay of the demolition of the church at 56 N. Beach St., Mayor Bill Partington has called a special meeting to discuss the property at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13.

The mayor said he called the meeting because he didn’t want to ignore the voices in the community.

”I thought it was important to hear from our residents and have a full discussion as much as possible to give the opportunity to give full consideration of the issue,” Partington said.

In May, commissioners voted 3-2 to demolish the building and construct a shell parking lot. Partington and Commissioner Dwight Selby voted against.

Partington said he doesn’t know if any of the other three commissioners changed their mind since that initial vote, but he felt the significant public interest in the church property warranted calling a special meeting anyway. The mayor received a lot of emails from citizens, more than he said he usually receives for city issues.

“Everybody made good points in their emails,” he said. “Probably the biggest thing is once it’s gone, it’s gone forever and it’s another piece of the Ormond Beach skyline that can’t be replaced. You just chip away at thing that are a big part of our history, and next thing you know, our history is gone.”

Commission to discuss CIP

Prior to the special meeting on the church property at 56 N. Beach St., the City Commission will hold a workshop to discuss its capital improvement program and draft budget.

The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the City Commission Conference Room 103 at City Hall.

Sandbags can be kept for the entirety of hurricane season.

Second meeting set for golf course

The second community meeting for the Tomoka Oaks golf course project will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

According to a flyer, there will be a presentation of conceptual plans and illustrations for the residential development, as well as a time for questions and answers.

The meeting will be held by the project design team, not the city of Ormond Beach.

This story was updated at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, to include a brief about the next Tomoka Oaks golf course meeting.
