Cooking classes, movie matinees, historical programs, and plant clinics are all available to adults at the Flagler Public Library in the upcoming weeks.

“We have a wonderful line up of programs scheduled,” said Library Director Holly Albanese. “My staff worked very hard to come up with a variety of offerings to suit all tastes.”

The once-a-month cooking series with Chef Warren begins at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 with “Plant-based Cooking – How to Use More Veggies, Fruits, and Beans to Create Incredible Meals. There will be a different theme each month through December (see below).

Newsies interested in the history of local journalism can attend a presentation by Joseph Vetter, who has a master’s degree in American history, at 1 p.m. Aug. 14 that will tell the story dating back to May 1783 when the East Florida Gazette was published. The Gazette was printed in St. Augustine in the days immediately after the American Revolution, when East Florida was still subject to King George III.

Movie matinees are scheduled 1 to 4 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 27. The Library’s licensing agreement doesn’t allow title announcements. The Aug. 20 selection is a 2021 American monster film directed by Adam Wingard, and the 12th film in the giant gorilla franchise. The Aug. 27 selection is a 2020 film about a Canadian farmer who takes on a giant corporation after their GMOs interfere with his crops.

Master Gardners from the University of Florida Flagler County Extension Office will host Plant Clinics from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 28, and again on Sept. 25, to help residents diagnose plant and pest problems.

Flagler County Attorney Al Hadeed at 2 p.m. Sept. 17 will discuss “The Long Arc of Our Constitution: The Path from Subjugated and Enslaved Black Labor to Citizenship and the Promise of Full Equality.”

At 2 p.m. on Sept. 24, Zach Zacharias, Senior Curator of Education and History at the Museum of Arts and Sciences, will make a presentation about “Florida Crackers and the Cowboys of the East.”

Historian Joseph Vetter returns at 1 p.m. Oct. 23 to portray Alexander Hamilton, an assistant to President George Washington, and the first Secretary of the Treasury.

All of these events will be held at the Main Branch Library in Palm Coast – 2500 Palm Coast Parkway NW – and are sponsored and funded by the Friends of the Library of Flagler County.

“We have the best Friends group a library could ask for,” Albanese said. “They are so generous and our residents are the beneficiaries.”

The remainder of the cooking series is as follows:

  • 2 p.m. Sept.10, “Cooking with Wine – Remove the Mystery and Discover the Benefits”
  • 2 p.m. Oct. 8, “Soup’s On! – Ditch the Can and Make Your Own”
  • 2 p.m. Nov. 5, “Company’s Coming! Now What?”
  • 2 p.m. Dec. 3, “Decadent Desserts – So Delicious, You’ll Want to Eat Them First!”

Additional movie matinees will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on September 3, October 1, October 15, November 6, December 11, and December 18. Flyers available in person at the library will provide the movie titles.

Future Museum of Arts and Sciences presentations will include:

  • 2 p.m. Oct. 22, “Dragons from the Deep”
  • 2 p.m. Nov. 12, “A Baker’s Dozen”
  • 2 p.m. Dec. 10, “Steamboating on the St. John’s and the Ocklawaha Rivers”
