The Ormond Beach City Commission will light the Christmas tree at the David Hood Plaza at City Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 1, a tradition that this year will be virtual for all to watch.

The tree lighting is one of the holiday events in the city that has been modified due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Annual events like the Home for the Holidays parade, Christmas at the Casements, Breakfast with Santa and the Gaslight Parade have all been canceled.

However, the city of Ormond Beach, the Home for the Holidays Parade Committee, Ormond MainStreet and the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce are all partnering to host a week-long drive-thru event in the downtown district.

The event, “Merry and Bright on Main Street,” will run Dec. 12-18. The city said in an email that it is a contest for businesses in the downtown Community Redevelopment Agency district to decorate their storefronts and win prizes. Santa Claus will drive down Granada Boulevard with members of the City Commission to welcome citizens to the district.

Participating businesses will be judged, and the business in first place will win $2,000.

The city is also encouraging businesses to offer specials during that week to encourage patrons to frequent the downtown.

Judging will take place at 6;30 p.m. on Dec. 12.

Golf tournament raises $11,500

A total of 56 golfers participated. Sponsors included the Elkins Family, the Daytona Auto Mall, Metra Electronics Corporation and Fields BMW of Daytona.
