Acting on the advice of public safety staff and the Florida Department of Health in Flagler County, Flagler County and Flagler Beach will both close their beaches starting at 6 a.m. Monday, March 23, according to news releases issued March 22 by the Flagler County and city of Flagler Beach governments.
Boardwalks and the Flagler Beach pier will also be closed.
County Administrator Jerry Cameron signed an emergency order on March 22 requiring the county beach closure, according to the county government news release.
“Both of our entities kept the beaches open as long as it was reasonably safe to do so,” Flagler County Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord said in the Flagler County government news release. “For the safety of our residents and visitors, we need to close all of our beaches to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, COVID-19.”
The city of Flagler Beach news release states, "The city of Flagler Beach hopes that our residents and visitors understand that the public’s health and safety during this worldwide pandemic is our utmost concern. This rapidly changing crisis is fluid and dynamic, and we as a city kept our beaches, boardwalk and pier open as long as it was safe for the health, safety and welfare of our community."
Residents are encouraged to follow safety guidelines issued by the Florida Department of Health and the CDC. Those include: Staying home when possible, washing hands frequently, avoiding contact with sick people; and, for those who are sick: covering coughs and sneezes, wearing a face mask around others, disinfecting surfaces frequently and staying home unless seeking medical care.
