An Ormond Beach woman died after her Oldsmobile was struck by a Honda Accord in the intersection of Hand Avenue and South Center Street around 6:16 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17.
Margaret McCraney, 75, died due to injuries sustained in the crash, Ormond Beach Police reported. The driver, 29-year-old Donald Tomlinson, along with the two other passengers in the Honda Accord, initially told officers that a man named "John" had been driving the car. They said "John" had ran away after the crash.
However, a nearby resident showed police a video on her phone captured by her Ring camera at the front of the house, which revealed Tomlinson exited the driver's side front door after the crash, according to his arrest report. Police determined Tomlinson was driving at a "very high rate of speed" at the time of the crash, based on skid marks and damage to McCraney's vehicle. The reporting officer wrote in Tomlinson's arrest report that he predicted Tomlinson had been driving at more than double the posted speed limit when he crashed. The speed limit in that area is 25 mph.
Tomlinson was charged with vehicular homicide and driving while license is habitually suspended. He was taken to jail after he was cleared at the hospital.
