Dear Editor:
It was appalling to learn that Flagler County Commissioner Greg Hansen recently remarked that he believed the wearing of face masks was “bulls---.” The comment was grossly irresponsible and flies in the face of advice and strong recommendations from the CDC, our Health Department, the president’s coronavirus task force, scientists and the medical community.
During this crucial time when we are all doing our best to open up our economy in a safe and common sense manner, Commissioner Hansen represents a clear and present danger to these important efforts. Thankfully, Hansen’s reckless remarks were publicly rebuked by our Health Department and Emergency Management officials — although in a much too diplomatic manner.
Also, curiously, Hansen's ill-informed bluster is not consistent with his actions. There are photos of him sporting a mask, and there now exists a mask-wearing mandate for entry into our county government buildings.

Dear Editor:
Our government officials have obviously recognized the importance of temperature checks and mask wearing to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus as we begin the country’s re-opening. They see the need to protect themselves, their government workers and those that visit their facilities.
Why are these government-mandated mask-wearing measures applicable to only their facilities, and how can they justify being selective in their concern for public health and safety? Is the safety of government officials and workers and their visitors more important than the employees and customers of grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential businesses?
Having to wear a mask to purchase a fishing license from our Tax Collector’s office, but not to buy groceries or fill a prescription makes little sense. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander.
