Work has begun on AdventHealth's planned 18,400-square-foot, 24-bed hospital-based emergency department in Port Orange.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be scheduled in several months, according to spokeswoman Lindsay Cashio. In the meantime, she said, "The land clearing and prep is complicated on this project due to the Brownfield designation and the immense undertaking to clean it. We have been aggressively developing this plan since we closed on the property at the end of August 2019."
Clean-up began in January and is expected to be completed by April 2020. Here is what AdventHealth has done so far:
Situated on seven acres directly south of the Port Orange Pavilion at 5811 Williamson Blvd., the AdventHealth Port Orange ER will house the same services found in hospital emergency rooms, including imaging and laboratory services. It will operate as a department of AdventHealth Daytona Beach.
Originally, AdventHealth expected to begin construction in March 2020.
“We will use as many local vendors as we can for this construction project," Noseworthy said in the original announcement. "Once completed, we will hire additional physicians and staff, and are looking to add about 40 full-time employees.”
The location is halfway between AdventHealth Daytona Beach and AdventHealth New Smyrna Beach. In addition to the ER, AdventHealth plans to expand on the property in the future and add a two-story medical office building for a variety of physicians and specialized care.

Halifax Health-Hospice seeks caring, supportive and dedicated volunteers to provide assistance with patient meal preparation, front desk reception, patient visits, and building maintenance at all of its four Care Center locations, which include Orange City, Edgewater, Port Orange and Ormond Beach.

A team of external law enforcement assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. will be arriving in Port Orange for a three-day visit of the Police Department, as the agency seeks national reaccreditation.
As part of this onsite assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments to the assessment team at a public forum at 6 p.m. March 4, at Council Chamber, 1000 City Center Circle, Port Orange. Those who are unable to attend the public session but would like to provide comments may do so by calling 386-506-5896 from 1 to 3 p.m. March 4. Public and telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the department’s ability to comply with the CALEA Standards.

America’s Boating Club is presenting an ABC Safe Boating Class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7 and 14. This is a two-day course over consecutive Saturdays held at Halifax River Yacht Club Activities Building at 346 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach, directly across from the Yacht Club on the West side of Beach Street.
