Our Lady of Hope Council 8086 of Port Orange participated in the dedication of a new ultrasound machine at Alpha Women’s Center at 4751 E. Moody Blvd. in Bunnell on Jan. 22.
The purchase was made possible through fundraising via the fourth annual Coastal Laps for Life, a joint effort among multiple Knights of Columbus councils. Our Lady of Hope is the founding council of this venture, which has so far placed six ultrasound machines at northern and central Florida locations.
“Since the existence of the center, the goal was to be able to offer limited obstetric ultrasounds," said Wilma Williams, center director. "There are a lot of moms in Flagler County that do not have insurance,” or who run into issues with Medicaid that force them to go outside the county for service.
Th new machine has allowed the center to move its free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds into one separate building, with the main building now an ongoing care center for helping moms, where they can come for options counseling, parenting classes, mentoring, grief support and more.
“I really am excited about their participation," Williams said of the Knights' help. "Since I started here, they have been a driving force in helping us offer free services to the community. It’s really impacted how we’ve been able to help women and mothers in Flagler County.”
