Volusia County's 14-day COVID-19 positivity rate is dropping.
During a COVID-19 briefing on Friday, Aug. 14, Patricia Boswell, Florida Department of Health county administrator, said the positivity rate is now at 6.97%, down from 7.4% last Friday.
“We’re moving in the right direction—down," Boswell said. "But the numbers are still much higher than we’d like to see and much higher than they were, let’s say mid-June, when the 14-day positivity rate on June 15 was 2.3%.”
FDOH reported 8,308 cumulative cases of coronavirus in Volusia County, an increase of 110 from Thursday, Aug. 13. So far, Boswell said the positive cases amount to 8% of the county's population, and the 151 deaths total 2% of all cases.
There is a downward trend in hospitalizations, emergency room visits for COVID-19-like symptoms and no new deaths were reported on Friday, Aug. 14. Boswell said this is due to the community's efforts in social distancing, hand-washing and mask-wearing.
“This is how we can continue to slow this virus in our community," she said.
Want to get tested? The Florida Division of Emergency Management is offering free COVID-19 testing and antibody testing at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, located at 3150 E. New York Ave. in DeLand, on Thursday-Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no testing on Wednesdays.
