The Ormond Beach Historical Society has hired a new executive director, and she comes with over 15 years of American museum experience, a pivotal skill for the organization as it continues to preserve the MacDonald House.

Julia Bussinger, who is originally from Bulgaria, received her doctoral degree in museum conservation and historical preservation from Gothenburg University in Sweden. She has managed museums from around the United States, including the Aerospace Museum of California, the El Paso Museum of Archaeology and the El Paso Museum of History, and most recently the American Museum of Science and Energy in Tennessee.

When the Historical Society announced the open executive director position in January, Bussinger said she couldn't believe it. She loves Ormond Beach, and had been impressed by its charm and history since she moved to Florida.

"My communication with the board and the people involved inspired me," Bussinger said. "They’re exceptionally knowledgeable, smart people, love historic preservation and dedicated to the mission the society.”

These are the factors that aid an executive director's success, she said.

Bussinger is ready to help turn the MacDonald House into the official Ormond Beach Museum of History and Welcome Center. Historical Society President Jerry Lampe said hiring someone with a museum background was very important. They need ssomeone to lead them through this process.

The Historical Society received over 50 applicants, Lampe said, but only two fit the specifications of what the board was looking for.

"She seemed to have all of the qualities that we needed," Lampe said. "Someone who would also engage in partnerships with other organizations in the community. Someone who would be actively engaged in the community. Someone who builds bridges with other organizations, especially the city commission, and someone who works collaboratively very well with everyone within the organization."

Bussinger talks from the heart and her passion for museum work is evident, Lampe added. With ECHO funding coming soon to help with the exterior renovation of the MacDonald House, the Historical Society will be focusing on renovating the interior.

The Historical Society is looking forward to see what she can bring to the table, he said.

“It’s not easy to find someone with all of the skills that she has, and we certainly did find them in her," Lampe said.

Having a place where the community and tourists can learn about the Ormond's birthplace of speed history will bring a sense of pride to the town, Bussinger said. She estimates it's likely to be a five-year project, but said it will be a benefit for the public.

“This is the biggest appeal and something I would like to dedicate a lot of time," Bussinger said. "Everything in my professional knowledge, I would like to help.
