Volusia County curfew for beachside extended

In addition to 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, beachside residents are also under curfew from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

The emergency curfew for cities and unincorporated areas east of the Halifax River has been extended, Volusia County stated in a news release. The new hours are from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, and from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. This doesn't apply to authorized public safety personnel.

The mandatory evacuation order applies to residents who live on the beachside, low-lying areas, RVs and mobile home parks east of I-95. People who live in areas not included in this order should continue to pay attention to weather forecasts and evacuate voluntarily, if needed.

Hurricane Dorian remains a category 4 as it moves slowly over Grand Bahama island, still at 1 mph, per the 4 p.m. National Hurricane Center update. Its winds have lessened to 145 mph, and it is about 105 miles away from West Palm Beach.

Volusia County is under a hurricane warning and storm surge warning as Dorian begins its movement up Florida’s east coast. Residents can expect sustained tropical storm force winds of 40 to 45 mph by midday Tuesday, with gusts up to 75 to 85 mph. A few tornadoes are possible today and tonight, with the greatest threat along the immediate coast.
